Male Privilege: It Starts With Recognition
Billy Kilgore is a 37-year-old stay at home dad. He has two young sons, one three years old and the other three months. After reading an article about “faux male feminists,” he realized what male privilege was, and that he was reaping the benefits.
What is male privilege? It’s the concept that because they are men, they don’t have to face the challenges and disadvantages that others do. The article included some comments from Auburn University sociology professor, Tal Peretz. He described the pedestal effect in which men receive undeserved praise, attention, and rewards for doing things that are traditionally done by women.
As Kilgore read the article, he recalled some moments where he received praise and attention that he didn’t deserve. An example he provided was the first time he went grocery shopping with his two children in tow. The oldest was strapped into the carriage, while the other he had swaddled across his check. As he walked through the store, employees and shoppers admired the children and gave him credit as being the best dad. He accepted the praise at the time and admitted that it stroked his ego. He didn’t think at the time about whether he deserved the praise, he just accepted it, and stepped onto that pedestal without hesitation.
The problem with this, Kilgore explained, is that we shouldn’t be placing one gender on a pedestal for doing the bare minimum, while the other person carries the bulk of the child care. This is not only unfair, but is also not in the families best interests. It can place a lot of stress on the family when the parenting roles are unbalanced.
Kilgore advises that it is important for men to assist in lowering the pedestal to keep a healthy family. But how do you lower the pedestal? He didn’t know, so he asked Peretz for help. He provided some practical ways to counter it and recommended using resources like a male privilege checklist to help identify the advantages.
To start, men can raise the awareness that male privilege does exist. The roles of men and women have been cemented in stone for a long time. Dismantling it can not be done alone and can begin with giving credit to women when credit is due. It can be hard for men to see the gender inequality due to how they have been raised to interact with women, but using the resources like the checklist can help make men more aware of the unconscious thoughts and behaviors.
Another way of raising awareness is by asking women how they perceive male privilege and listen to what they have to say. That is important. Another thing to consider is once you are aware of the privilege, how do you respond to it? Peretz recommended reacting with humility, a sense of humor, and making sure you bring attention and awareness back to women, who have been doing this role for a long time.
In learning about male privilege, Kilgore realized he was now more aware when he goes out with his two children and the attention he receives. If his wife was with the children instead of him, she would not be getting the same attention. That is what is wrong and what should be brought to the forefront. Just because the gender roles are reversed, doesn’t mean the male should be getting the praise for doing what women have been doing for centuries. Kilgore wants men to do better at stepping off the pedestal and help create more balanced roles within the family.

“A cat makes you worry about it, feed it, take care of it, give it special attention,” explained Nuñez. “When we were outside and free, we never did this. We discovered it in here.”
