Material as Light as Plastic but Robust of Steel Created by MIT Scientists
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT has been making breakthroughs on the engineering front for years. Their creations never cease to amaze and this time around is no different.
Researchers at the university have created a new substance that is as robust as steel yet is much lighter in weight than traditional plastics.
According to MIT Chemical Engineering Professor Michael Strano, they can effortlessly produce this material in large quantities and it has applications ranging from ultra-light sealants for automobiles and smartphones to building blocks for huge buildings and bridges.
According to a release from MIT, “We don’t generally think of polymers as if they were something that you should use to preserve a structure, but now with this product, you can introduce fresh things. That’s why we’re so enthusiastic about it,” says the senior author of a new study.
In comparison to bulletproof glass, the substance is a few times tougher and requires double as much effort to destroy it, although it has just roughly one-sixth the thickness of steel, as per MIT.
A new polymer-forming process was devised by researchers. Polymers, which include plastics, rubber, and glass, are all examples.
Other MIT research includes the development of plants that glow in the dark.
Creating a lightweight, flat, two-dimensional polymer was one of the goals of the study that the team set out to accomplish. This material has eluded scientists for decades, but last week, a new method they devised was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.
Individual molecules (monomers) are joined together by chemical bonds to form chains of polymers. Ordinarily, as with baking a sheet cake, polymers expand as they are molded into three-dimensional things. The problem is that the polymer can become three-dimensional if even one monomer starts rotating.
If you wanted to cram several kids into an auditorium, you could have them link arms and form a line. It is, however, impossible to maintain order if even one of the children decides to be rowdy and shift around.
When the monomers linked together and grew into a polymeric chain without prompting some of the other monomers to escape, this was the breakthrough.
The same way you can cram rows of well-behaved youngsters into an assembly hall using rows of two-dimensional polymers, you can do the same with three-dimensional polymers.
MIT believes that this groundbreaking creation will take the world of engineering to new heights. So far, there has been a tremendous response to this new development at the renowned institution from various stakeholders.
