Many parents have been buying dogs for their children for so many years. Dogs have always been considered one of the most ideal pets by even health professionals.
For years, many psychologists and even scientists associated pet ownership with behavioral development in smaller children.However, there was no official research or data to support the claims. Parents who noticed the impact that dogs had on their young children continued to report this to other parents and whoever would listen.
Now, researchers have been popping up all over the globe detailing the benefits of dog ownership to children, especially those with social and development issues.
Dogs offer unconditional love and teach owners about responsibility, and recent research shows that they can also help children profit from improved social and emotional well-being.
The report was published in the Journal of Pediatric Research recently.
One Professor states that while they believed that dog ownership would bring certain benefits to the well-being of young children, they were shocked that the mere existence of a family dog was correlated with many positive attitudes and emotions.
Previous studies have shown that dog ownership causes adults and children to exercise more frequently than if they did not own one, according to the researchers. However, they emphasize that owning a dog and its impact on child advancement have still not been studied enough.
The team sent a questionnaire to more than 1,600 parents—among whom almost 700 owned a dog—with preschoolers between the ages of 2 and 5 who asked them how much their child had been interested in walking or playing with a dog for more than three years.
Parents were also asked to report on their child’s social-emotional growth, biological sex, sleeping patterns, and screening time, according to the analysis.
Researchers argue that children in dog-owned households were thirty percent less likely to participate in antisocial behavior, forty percent less likely to have trouble engaging with other children, and nearly thirty-five percent more likely to engage in thoughtful activities, such as sharing.
The study also showed that children who played with their dog more often (74 percent) were more likely to participate in thoughtful actions than those who played with their dog less often.
It’s a win-win for the owner and the dog, and the benefits are obvious from a simple blood test.
Dr. Rebecca Johnson, who is the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction Director, says that when we see, touch, hear or speak to our companion animals, beneficial neurohormones are released, generating a sense of goodwill, pleasure, nurturing, and happiness.
Meanwhile, stress hormones are blocked, Johnson said, and as a result, heart rate and blood pressure decrease, helping us handle stress in ways that are not detrimental to our wellbeing.
The authors said that more research is required to understand whether different types of pets have the same impact or whether the degree of attachment of the child to the pet makes a difference in their development.
Meanwhile, with every study being favorable or neutral, it’s a no-brainer that one should get a dog even for your own test.
Getting a pet should not just be viewed as a Christmas gift, but as a developmental tool(albeit a friendly and cuddly one) that can be the breakthrough your troubled child may need.

New Technology Takes Aim At Mental Health Support For Emergency Workers

As our understanding of mental health continues to grow and deepen, so do potential sources of support. Australia put itself on the map recently thanks to the introduction of its non-profit collaboration, Fortem Australia.
Fortem Australia and Prince Harry to Develop Mental Health Toolkit
Fortem Australia grew out of the idea that every emergency worker deserves a chance to support their mental health. The service was created in collaboration between several government employees, tech, and private individuals to offer a digital toolkit focused entirely on building mental health support. The toolkit was designed to support individuals who were put into stressful situations for their careers, such as firemen, police officers, and other emergency first responders.
While Fortem Australia is leading the way with their work on the digital toolkit, work has been completed in collaboration with Peak State, a social company backed by the likes of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. The program and toolkit seek to provide real support while lessening the impact that first responders experience in high-pressure situations.
Prince Harry spoke about Fortem Australia by highlighting his own experiences in the military. Prince Harry detailed how he saw the importance of strong critical thinking even in the face of stress and danger, likening the practice to training a muscle. Prince Harry would go on to say, “With Peak Fortem we are witnessing the next step in a global movement towards mental fitness.” Prince Harry isn’t alone in his enthusiasm for the platform as Australia’s prime minister, Scott Morrison, has been vocal in support and praise.
An Epidemic of Mental Health Among Frontline Workers
A study published by the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry would go on to reveal that more than 10% of emergency workers will develop post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of their work. The numbers rise even higher when specifying firefighters (15%) against the rest of the field. The publication would go on to reveal that the majority of frontline workers experiencing PTSD did not feel like they had affordable or accessible mental health assistance at their disposal. This is, of course, where the free toolkit developed by Fortem Australia comes into the fold.

The UK Ministry of Defence has already shifted its organizational focus from reacting to mental health crises toward mental health resilience training. A spokesperson for the MOD would comment to Positive News that ‘mental fitness’ is ‘just as important as physical fitness.’
High schools’ students have a reason to smile since Yale is offering the famous ‘happiness’ course for free
Over the past few years, various things are to be the root cause of mental illness among young people; some of these things include the high cost of living, lousy parenting, love, racism, discrimination, chronic diseases, among other things.
Recently, the global pandemic health crisis has drawn a steep curve towards the growing mental health disorders among young people, and therefore Yale has come up with a unique way to help young people combat the rising mental health crisis.
Today Yale University is currently offering many of its most famous online courses to over 600 with little to no income high school students across the United States for free as a way of arming the students against mental health disorders.
In 2018 Laurie Santos, Yale psychology professor, created an online course and named it “The Science of Well-Being.” In the same year, the course was introduced as a personalized course version, “Psychology and The Good Life.” which attracted over 1300 undergraduate students in its first semester.
According to Santos, who lived among the students in the Yale Silliman college said that “the first-hand idea came to her after seeing hundreds of her students experiencing growing levels of depression and anxiety.”
“The global pandemic has brought a very challenging time, which means students need to learn new tactics to combat and protect themselves from mental health disorders,” Santos said in a press release. She also said that “our primary goal is to equip all the students with scientifically proven plans for living a satisfying life as well as create chances for striving and low-income students from different races readiness.”
According to Yale University, the ‘Happiness’ course was developed in partnership with the National Equity Lab and the University of Connecticut and full support from the Arthur M. Blank Foundation. This is to provide students with scientifically proven ways for living a more fulfilling life and measures, what psychological science proves about being happier, how it feels a little stressed, and how to thrive even more.
The first half of this course is designed to insight from psychology and neuroscience and what drives happiness. The second half educates the students on behavior changes exercises designed to help rewire the brain.
Yale University began offering this version of the course online and to the public in March for free. Up to date, over 3.3 million people have enrolled in the class. This year Santos is bringing this class to the classrooms, and over 40 schools from 17 cities are beginning of February.
The online version of the course offered by Yale University online has not decided its name yet. It is believed that it will be partially adopting the original course. However, to receive the course’s full version, students will be offered support by the local teachers and Yale teaching Fellow.
The good news comes while the United States is continuously struggling with the increased population of mental health conditions. Since January 2020, at the beginning of the global pandemic to date, one in six American citizens has started therapy for the first time.

Tennessee Residents Take Initiative To Clear River Pollution
Tennessee’s residents realize the importance of cleaning up their state, knowing the benefits to them and their children. The rivers had become severely polluted with a range of garbage from household to commercial.
Environmental regulations, such as the Clean Air Act, have been proven to protect rivers, lakes, and marshlands. However, despite these protections, solid waste still tends to flounder into the environment because of its fluids.
Because surface waters collect on the land and eventually enter the drainage systems, anything that is tossed or knocked into a watershed finally reaches the drainage way.
Urban areas often generate trash and litter by the stormwater runoff. Each particle of debris or junk will carry five elements of garbage or rubbish.
This practice also happens in both urban and rural areas. It sometimes includes dumping electronic waste directly into a waterbody or wetland or depositing it along a riverbank or lake shore.

This is what they decided to do. They chose to do it themselves because they want to keep things going and do it alone.
The KTNRB Directors believe that when the community takes the initiative and forms alliances, putting time and effort into beautifying their community, that’s when the river situation will improve.
When KSBI took part in an October 1 restoration action, they also teamed up with the national nonprofit organization Living Lands & Waters, who took along several giant vessels to clean up nearly five thousand tons of trash.
The total amount of trash collected was just over fourteen thousand pounds during a handful of the cleanups.
The organization aspires to orchestrate another massive cleanup in April, as well as to remove approximately one hundred thousand pounds of garbage from the river before the year ends.

Reuben Schoots discovered himself with little more than time on his hands after he developed a number of neglected tropical diseases during an eight-month hiking trip across Latin America.

The 27-year-old man from Canberra lost thirty-five pounds from his once slim, muscular body and was so frail that he was lucky to make it out of bed.
Schoots became dependent on painkillers with pretty much daily pain. He lost his coffee artist job and, finally, quit doing his university course in nourishment.
Schoots accepted that everything was over as he’d believed it was. The misery he was entrenched in had left him aimless, even though he knew he would have to pursue a different path, until the day something tiny sparked his interest and led to an awakening that would turn his life.
A friend who arrived to visit was attired in a glass-backed mechanical watch; its motion was obvious—the enlightenment of all the tiny fragments functioning together that enabled it to operate fascinated Schoots.
While watchmaking never really was a hobby, he found that during his rehabilitation, it was not just something he might attempt; it’s something that really attracted him.
He just wanted to do something with his hands, but he didn’t know that was what he wished to do until he got sick and was robbed of anything he had wanted to do or had.
The two-century technique of watchmaking is immensely accurate, in addition to being “time-consuming.” Schoots jumped full speed ahead into the studio, studying George Daniels’s strategies, a posthumous expert watchmaker, a man famous for his beautiful, handmade designs.
